PREFACE

The IPMU Conference is organized with the aim of bringing together scientists working on various methods for the management of uncertainty in intelligent systems. This conference provides a medium for the exchange of ideas between theoreticians and practitioners using different methods to address the important issue of uncertainty.

This is the twelfth edition of the IPMU conference, which started in 1986 and has been held every two years in the following locations in Europe: Paris (five times), Perugia, Annecy, Madrid, Granada, Palma de Mallorca and Urbino.

The programme of the conference consisted of five invited talks by the following distinguished researchers: Marco Dorigo, Itzhak Gilboa, Serafín Moral, Enrique Ruspini and Lofti Zadeh, together with two hundred and forty communications authored by researchers from 37 countries, including the regular track and seventeen special sessions.

The success of such an event is mainly due to the hard work and dedication of a number of people, and the collaboration of several institutions. We want to acknowledge the help of the members of the Advisory Board and the International Programme Committee, the additional reviewers, the organizers of special sessions, the local organizing committee, and the volunteer students. All of them deserve many thanks for having helped to attain the goal of providing a balanced event with a high level of scientific exchange and a pleasant environment.

Last but not least, we would like to thank the following institutions, which have helped the organization of the 12th IPMU Conference:

· Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia
· Universidad de Málaga.
· Junta de Andalucía.
· Diputación Provincial de Málaga.
· Patronato de Turismo de la Costa del Sol.
· Ayuntamiento de Málaga.
